Birth and Re-Birth

This was the bracelet that was put on my wrist at Doctors' Hospital in Carbondale Illinois when I was born. I happened upon it this evening. Bishop Rhymes Moncure once said in a renewal of baptism sermon at Annual Conference "You know, we all have the same first name....Precious" and he pointed to the congregation and said "Precious Jim", "Precious Peggy", "Precious Mike". I am glad that through baptism that is true. I'm trying to get used to my new last name though, and it helps to remember, as in all times of change, as Natalie Sleeth wrote in her 'Hymn of Joy', "From the past shall come the future, what it holds a mystery." I John says to us "we do not yet know what we will be." But no matter how small or grown up or wrinkled or soiled or shriven from the water or softened with lotion my hand may be, I do know who holds tomorrow and I know who holds that hand.
