Pictureless
Tomorrow morning I give an hour workshop on "Wesleyan Wisdom for the Emerging Church" at Saint Paul School of Theology's Wesley Studies Conference. I am doing my thing about Wesley's life experiences, isolating his encounter with the Moravians on board the ship to Georgia "Were you not scared?" I believe he said, and the Moravian leader said, "no, we (women and children too) are not afraid to die."; then the uncomfortable preaching in the field--and on his father's grave; and then the sending of Coke to consecrate Asbury as a superintendent--going outside the bounds of what was truly legal in Wesley's experience. And I relate those to the emerging church conversation. And I tried to work up my first-ever (I am ashamed to admit) power point presentation on this, and attempted to Google images for each of these points. Try as I might, I have not found a picture of Wesley and the Moravians on board ship. I KNOW I have seen one--maybe in an older biography of Wesley?--but I don't think any have found their way to the web...and I am giving up on the power point thing anyway. I hope my charming personality and winsome ability to hold attention will be enough for them tomorrow. We'll see. Just bring the passion, Susan, and hopefully the articulation will follow...one can always hope.
