I've been reading and praying over Psalm 139, one of the psalms which I return to time after time after time. It radiates a sense of assurance and hope and the fact that God does not see us and our situations in life as we see them too often---bleak, unanswerable questions always there, a malaise of guilt over the past or fear over the future. In our Creator and Redeemer, there is no bleakness or wilderness or guilt or fear that can take us to so dark a place that the God of all Hope and Redemption cannot give light...not just GIVE light, but IS light. "Even the darkness is not dark to you, the night is a bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you."
John Michael Talbot has recorded a song Holy Darkness. There's a link below that I hope works for you to hear it. Actually if you keep listening to it, you'll hear more JMT! John Michael only has verse four on this recording The song is written by Dan Schutte. I shuttered the first time I heard it---can darkness be holy? And this song helped be to know again that indeed it can. I have been through some darkness in my life as have you. This song really does touch my soul with its truth and promise. It is a setiing of a writings by St. John of the Cross.

And here are the words to the entire song:
Holy Darkness
by Dan Schutte
Holy darkness, blessed night,
heaven's answer hidden from our sight
As we await you, O God of silence,
we embrace your holy night.
1. I have tried you in fires of affliction; I have taught your soul to grieve.In the barren soil of your loneliness,there I will plant my seed.
2. I have taught you the price of compassion;
you have stood before the grave.Though my love can seem like a raging storm,this is the love that saves.
3. Were you there when I raised up the mountains?Can you guide the morning star?Does the hawk take flight when you give command?Why do you doubt my pow'r?
4. In your deepest hour of darkness I will give you wealth untold.When the silence stills your spirit,will my riches fill your soul.
5. As the watchman waits for morning,and the bride awaits her groom, so we wait to hear your footsteps we rest beneath your moon.
