Cana and I are off to the Garcias tomorrow--flying to Nashville. I know I have offered accolades about them before but as a reminder--I had heard of both of them for some years--Joaquin's work at the General Board of Higher Ed and Ministry and Barbara at the time I met her at the General Board of Discipleship. I went to work for Barbara as her assistant in 1984 for the first Focus event for children's workers in the church. What fun we had! How busy we were! It was from Barbara that I learned much of how to administrate and still be gracious to folks. Joaquin I met through Barbara, but had seen many times in chapel at Scarritt where I had gone back to school after having received my MDiv and serving for four years in the old Southern Illinois conference. I went back to school in order to get an MA in Christian Education so I could work on a staff in children's ministries.
To make a long wonderful story short, I have remained friends with them over these years. They actually knew me before I married and were at our wedding. Much has happened since then in all of our lives; they remain extremely loving and beloved friends, and were and are Cana's godparents.
The picture is of a special meal at the Tennessee Annual conference announcing the Barbara Phillips Garcia scholarship for students at Martin College...especially for Latino students and other under represented minorities at that school.
We have not seen them in a very long time; we expect to get loved on big time when we get there and we will love big time back. I will send pictures...
